SAGE 2023 - Demo Sonic Outbound (SAGE '23 Demo)

General Information

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are interested in this project, you can help us by joining our Discord server. We need more level designers, spriters, and a animator for the cutscenes (to replace these sprite animations I made)

Story

This game is set one year after Sonic Mania's bad ending where Robotnik had the Phantom Ruby and Chaos Emeralds in possession. After the final battle in the core of the Titanic Monarch, Robotnik was stuck in Little Planet and started collecting the Time Stones and preparing his greatest plan yet.

In the present, Sonic decided to invite Tails and Knuckles (but Knuckles rejects the invitation to guard the Master Emerald) to vacations on Heaven Shore, a pleasant beach he loves to relax in. Suddenly, Robotnik appears and attacks Sonic, but the second Sonic charges back, a fast creature flew into him. Meanwhile, Knuckles falls from the sky exhausted. Turns out this was Meta, a cybernetic fennec fox who is working for Robotnik. Meta had stolen the Master Emerald. Before leaving, Eggman shows the Time Stones, Phantom Ruby, and Chaos Emeralds he has in possession and leaves. Because of the scope of the problem, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles agreed to take separate paths. Soon, they will discover a third foe, Fang the Sniper, who works with Robotnik as a mercenary.

About the game

This demo will contain a playable Star Light and Sunset Park to play. It has four acts, four bosses. Sunset Park is reimagined in such a way it is accurate to the source material (abandoned amusement park), and still feel fresh, and Star Light was updated, because Act 1 had barely any badnik and Act 2 was cut short.

Plans for next demo

We plan to polish and replace every placeholder sprites, fix most bugs, and when this is done, we will make Heaven Shore. If we have time, we will make Techno Turret, or even Robotropolis, but we will see if we have time.

Yeah, the first one was just intended to be a proof-of-concept, and it worked because we got 2 awesome level designers to join us
Really enjoyable game. I love the new sprites for Sonic they look super great. Level design is very nice and balanced. Physics are perfect. For most games (even big, mass-market. commercially released games) I usually notice 1 or 2 small things that can be improved on, but for me on my playthrough I didn't run into anything! No bugs, nothing. I agree with the other reviewer though, a cutscene skip button would be nice. One little small touch I loved was the SEGA logo twist and also the sketch of Sonic in the intro which helps the game ooze with personality and charm. Amazing work and thank you!

Just played it. I gotta say, love the idea of continuing upon a "bad ending", and the Star Light boss distorting the arena and teleporting a la Kirby was pretty clever. The levels themselves are pretty good too, but I see no point on remaking Sunset Park yet again, I'd recommend to keep the same level design and gimmicks, but rebrand the stage into its own thing.
Also, I want to address a bug that made clip through one of the walls in Star Light Act 1.
Otherwise pretty solid game, keep it up guys! =D

" but I see no point on remaking Sunset Park yet again " Are you referencing to Triple Trouble 16 bit? We aren't gonna give up because they did it before us. You see, Sunset Park in TT16 is the most wrong shit I ever seen. Never was SPZ meant to be a city or a factory; it was always an abandoned amusement park, and my man Noah thinks his ideas are better than what the manual says (and dare I say a lot of these manual zones were very original and he ruined them with unoriginal ideas).

We are remaking Sunset Park in a accurate way it deserves. I am not gonna "rebrand" because Noah failed to recreate Sunset Park. I honestly hate these kind of comments that tells me to not "copy" TT16 in some way because I added Sunset Park or Fang. In SAGE 22, people thought I was copying TT16 and SRB2 because of Fang. I honestly would prefer to cancel Sonic Outbound than "rebrand" Sunset Park because no point in fixing all the wrong Noah did.

Anyways, thanks and sorry for the rant. I just always get some type of comment that talks about how I shouldn't copy TT16 when I never even fucking knew what TT16 was while designing Sunset Park for Outbound.

Your rant about how much you hate other people making Sonic fangames took away most of the goodwill I had from playing this demo, but it was nice until then. The acts did all feel pretty empty, but they had their moments.

????????????? All I remember is me criticizing Sonic 3 Chronicles' engine having physic bugs and responding to people telling me I am taking inspiration of TT16 because of SPZ, which is like saying "Dwayne the Rock Johnson from Fortnite". I know fans do the fangames out of passion, like me, but every other fangamers and I aren't free of criticism

I really like what I'm seeing here. The levels are pretty nicely designed, the cutscenes before zone bosses were really cool, and it plays very well. For critique, I felt like starposts were way too common in Sunset Park Act 1 (seriously, I found one almost immediately after the start), the bosses took a weird amount of precision and timing to hit, and the visuals of Starlight Act 2 didn't really match the music used. As energetic and beat-heavy as that song is, I would expect something like lights flashing to the beat or something. Also, while the lack of a speed cap is cool, I did end up going so fast in Starlight Act 2 that I soared off a ramp so high that I flew into a wall at the top of the level with no collision.

Hey, I keep running into a weird issue. When I started the game, it made me Tails & then put me in Sonic's Sunset Park. When I quit & opened it back up, it loads me into Casino Night which is currently just a long stretch of nothing. It won't let me do anything on the Save File Select Screen, it just IMMEDIATELY goes into the Tails Save File. I even redownloaded the whole .zip, but it didn't change any of my settings. What do I do?

Edit: Well I managed to get around it by rapidly hitting my Right Arrow Key (Not Right on my D-Pad, the menu wasn't taking it) to get a new save & it made me Sonic so I got to play!

Firstly, the game looks great. Sunset Park fully realized is fantastic, & the sprite changes made to Star Light Zone (atleast Act 1) are fantastic. I also very much liked the Fang Boss. Physics also feel very on-point. I don't think it feels quite as good as Mania, but its by a narrow margin that's hard to explain, y'know?

Now for the Cons. As in my original reply, there's issues in the Menuing. Even after setting the Start Button, the Title Screen only took the Enter Key. Then I had that super weird save file glitch. When I finally got to play, I had a few bits of jank with the collision which were fine but the Act 1 Boss was a PAIN. His attacks didn't always target Sonic meaning there were opportunities I didn't get to injure him. When he got behind me, I was stuck for so long bc I would dodge the 1st ball, get hit by the 2nd ball, which means I missed the 3rd ball. His moving back & forth made the ball placements uneven & harder to dodge. Its also what taught me the music doesn't loop proper. It hits an ending, doesn't play for a few seconds, then starts from the beginning.
Then in Star Light, everything was mostly fine beyond just getting frustrated at the seesaw bc I was trying to get a secret (which was my own doing), but that frustrated then got at the game when I couldn't injure the Act 1 Boss, & in trying to Spin Dash into him... he pushed me under the entire arena & I had to restart, by which point I just closed the game.

I think this game has amazing potential, even looking at the Gamejolt page for stuff like the new "Classic Amy in Modern Clothing" sprite I'm excited. but I think I'll wait until the next demo to play anymore. This is definitely one of the more promising demos here!

We are releasing a post-SAGE update with fixes. We will then port Outbound to GMS2, with a better engine than Harinezumi (which main issues are collision going crazy) and then start with the other Sonic zones. Amy is for a post-Outbound story mode. Where she, Mighty, and Ray, team up after that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles mysteriously disappear a month after the end of the main story. Meanwhile, the Hooligans jump on the occasion to steal the Chaos Emeralds. We will also eventually replace the borrowed music with Plasmariel's OST, because he finally got time now. Thanks

Its a real nice game, but there is a weird thing that happens. if i play at certain times in the day, it lags hard
Most likely unrelated to Outbound. Might be your PC suffering from lag from another app. Did you verify Task mananger?

Please bring back the feature that allows you to keep a little speed when turning, it was such a good addition why'd you take it out?

I removed it because like everyone hated it. Maybe we could add it as some new toggable feature or whatever

Please don't make another Spider-Man lotus but in the Sonic fandom. the game is amazing and has a lot of potential. but then i went down to the comments section and saw some of your answers.... everything smells like Spider-Man lotus to me. keep on with the game and please... focus on making something solid and good instead of a "masterpiece".
