SAGE 2023 - Demo Kid Bubblegum

General Information

greetings.png
Aliens have invaded, and Kid Bubblegum is too cool to let that slide. Armed with his trusty Gumslinger, he’ll kick some alien butt and shoot bubblegum…and he has plenty of gum!

Kid Bubblegum is my next platformer project after Go! Go! PogoGirl and Chibi Ninja Shino-kun and as usual, it'll deliver a healthy dose of retro-platforming inspired by games from the 80s and 90s!

Features
  • Use your Bubblegum Gun to hop, bounce and glide through the levels
  • Fight your way through the city, a casino and more
  • Capture enemies in bubbles and kick 'em into walls...or other enemies!

  • Lots of bubblegum

So put on your most 90s baseball cap and get ready to clean the streets... with gum!

The controls are fully remappable, but here are the defaults (along with some tips) to get you going!
  • Arrow keys/ Gamepad DPad: Move left and right, climb ladders and aim up and down
  • C / Gamepad A: Jump. Press button again while moving into a wall to stick to it
  • X / Gamepad X: Shoot a bubble
  • V / Gamepad B: Pick up/throw items
Tip #1 You can bounce off your own bubbles to reach higher areas or cross gaps. Press the jump button the moment you land on a bubble to perform a super bounce.

Tip #2 If you have trouble jumping on enemies, trap them in a bubble! Afterwards you can even kick them into other enemies.

Tip #3 You can shoot a bubble into another bubble to knock it away and create a bubble bridge across particularly large gaps!

Tip #4 Hold Up + Jump in the air to start gliding using a gum bubble. Perfect for safe landings!

Kid Bubblegum is a unique retro paltformer done in a SMS or early Genesis/Megadrive style! It revolves around the titular character making and utilizing bubblegum bubbles to attack enemies and to aid in jumping. These bubbles add a unique spin to classic platformers. Unlike Mario or Sonic, KB can't jump very high or far without the aid of his bubbles and so in order to reach certain heights or cross certain pits, he has to place bubbles in specific places (and you can only place 3 at a time). This adds a welcomed strategic element that's not normally found in platformers.
Aesthetically, the game is absolutely gorgeous, while remaining true to the style of the SMS/Early Genesis/Megadrive style!
I look forward to coming back to this one after SAGE!

It's nice to have a demo that isn't in a grassland, and I like games that try to have cool movement mechanics, but I wish this played a bit faster. Right now it feels like every jump has a specific way I'm supposed to use the singular bubble mechanic to transverse it, while I'd rather be fast and powerful enough to move through things in the way that feels best to me.

Thanks for playing and the feedback! The game was actually supposed to have more "deliberate" gameplay, because my previous game Chibi Ninja Shino-kun pretty much let you go full-on ninja, running, dashing and jumping around all over the place. For Kid Bubblegum, I wanted to try something different and make the platforming a bit more puzzle-ish I guess, where you have to use the core mechanic to figure out how best to traverse the levels. I'm open to ideas however, so let me know if you have something specific in mind that would've improved your experience!

(I've been toying with the idea of adding a run button, like in Kid Chameleon or Mario. Would that have helped any?)

I'm enjoying this so far but I am stuck at the key that needs to be moved up two ledges, then to a higher door.

I've gotten it to the second ledge but can't figure out what to do next. Any hints?

Btw, the controls are very precise, which is really nice. However the timing of the superjump (landing on a bubble + C) feels a bit inconsistent.
