Each zone will have 4 time zones like in Knuckles Chaotix. Dawn, daytime, dusk and night. Every time you exit an act of the actual zone, the lighting changes between dawn, dusk and night. Take Great big grove here for example.
You can clearly see the pallete swaps between time zones in the backdrop. I used backdrops from other zones to create this. So when you exit and come back to the level, you will see the time zone change in this order shown.
