Overview

SPEEDY THE ROLLERSKATER SMS EDITION

Speedy the Rollerskater SMS Edition is a demake of Speedy the Rollerskater, my first game, using the Open Surge Engine. Beside fixing some issues of the original version, Speedy SMS Edition offers a What If scenario...

What if both Sega's Master System and Game Gear had a Sonic-like game that exploits their hardware limitations, offering a gaming experience similar to Sonic 16 Bits titles in both systems?

Inspired on the SEGA Master System, the Sonic SMS series of Creative Araya, Sonic Origins 2 from Lionsoft Videogames and Sonic Blasting Adventure from Gustavo Firmino Cazonato.

FEATURES

+ 16 Bit like gameplay, inspired on Sonic the Hedgehog.
+ New boss fights
+ Remade cutscenes and enemies.
+ Graphics in SMS colours, respecting the limitations of the hardware itself.
+ Original Soundtrack
+ For the first time ever... Speedy can grind in rails in this version!

STORY
Join Speedy the Rollerskater on his first adventure ever! His island is under attack by the evil Iceman, who is turning innocent fellas into evil monsters to achieve his goal, freezing up Speedy's island, to take over the world. Skate through sunny beaches, deep jungles, honey caves, forgotten ruins, and a candy factory until you reach Iceman and fight him on his Ice Base on the sky!

WHAT DOES THIS DEMO HAVE?

Sunny Beach Zone with 2 Acts full of items, enemies and more; and a Boss Act.

HOW TO PLAY
  • Arrow keys: Move Speedy. Left and Right keys move Speedy on those directions. Hold the left or right key to skate at full speed.
  • Up Key: Look up.
  • Down key arrow: Duck.
  • Enter key: Confirm options. During gameplay, press Enter to pause the game. In the pause menu, you can choose either continue the level, restart or quit the game.
  • Space Bar: Jumping. If you're ducking, press the space bar to charge. Let both the Down Key and the Space Bar go, and you'll roll in the floor at huge speed.
  • How to grind: When you see a rail, jump and move on it, and automatically you'll grind on it. Depending the direction Speedy is staring, you will either grind up or down.

Comments

Its neat to see a sonic adjacent indie game that actually tries to embrace the 8-bit side of that series, since it feels like a lot of them try to move the aesthetic elements to 16 bit. Really excited to see where this goes.

Only really issue I encountered was at the end of the current final stage, where I was able to run away from the capsule and into a hole.
