Overview

SML2Pic00.png

Super Mario Land 2 is back!
Relive the golden days in this remake of a classic- spiced up with lots of new features!
This final update marks the end of the SAGE 2024 demo. Saves are backwards compatible of course. Patch notes are at the bottom.

If you want to follow this project in the long run, then you can visit the Gamejolt page!

Story:
After a crusade against the mysterious alien Tatanga in Sarasa Land, Mario decided to return back to his own island for a well earned rest. Turns out an evil creep who goes by the name of Wario took the chance of his abscence to take over Mario's castle and put the people of Mario Land under a magic spell! To reclaim his castle and free Mario Land from its new ruler, Mario must find the 6 Golden Coins scattered across the island and invade ...his own home?!

New Features:

A New Coat Of Paint
Each level has been recreated to keep the original spirit but now uses a wide range of different color palettes alongside many new decorative elements. Additionally, every level has its own music track! Of course, they can be disabled as well.

New Collectable
A brand new collectable in the form of Silver Coins was added.
These encourage exploration and can be traded in for many new extras!

Luigi's Casino
This will be your central hub regarding most new extras. Spend either regular or silver coins to exchange items such as Music Discs for the soundtest, Skins, HUD Colors, the Ice Flower, Walljumping and much more!
You can also replay the expanded sortiment of minigames here! For a fee of course...

Missions
Short on cash? No worries, missions have been added! Every level now has its own mission tied to it. These remixed layouts offer different goals, such as collecting clocks to extend a short timer, defeating enemies to increase the score, outsmarting a clone who imitates your moves, collecting 100 bronze coins and more!

Local Multiplayer and Time Trials
If you're feeling a little more competitive, give the local multiplayer a try. It features three modes: Race, Coin Catcher and Bell Control. Got no friend over? Well, how about competing against Shadow Mario then? Levels can become haunted, in which Shadow Mario will challenge you to a race. Can you beat him?

Wario's Conquest
Last but not least is an entirely new campaign, Wario's Conquest. In this special mode, you get to experience how Mario Land fell under Wario's control.
Be warned though, this mode is not for the faint of heart!
You will have to explore vast hub worlds for pipes that lead to bite-sized missions. You have to pay an entry fee, however winning will reward you with a much larger reward! Rack up coins and conquer all 6 zones before tackling Mario's Castle itself.

Progress:

35%

Super Mario Land 2

10%

Wario's Conquest

Progress is going mostly smoothly. As of now, the Tree Zone and Mario Zone is finished. There are still some things to fix though.
Most of the new systems are finished as well, which took the most time to create.

You can help by reporting some (hopefully) good and constructive feedback so I can try to make this game the best it can be. Please be aware that I do this in my free time and am no expert at programming. I hope I can make this game justice, even if it will take some time.

By the way, the game is also on Gamejolt. However, this demo will be exclusive to SAGE for some while.

Different weather conditions were added to the levels!

SML2Pic12.png

While the level design remains intact, these new decorative effects can give a whole new vibe to a level!
SML2Pic03.png

The original OST of SML2 is iconic, however the quantitiy of it left a bit to be desired. This remake aims to add new tracks that attempt to keep the energetic spirit of the original intact. Of course it can be disabled as well.
SML2Pic04.png

Not all levels feature 5 Silver Coins. Some have merely 3 or 1 to find.
SML2Pic13.png

Bosses wait to be defeated. If you succeed, you gain access to minigames featuring them!

Shadow Mario runs faster than you, but his jumps slow him down. Try to make few but long jumps. Getting into the flow of things without bumping into obstacles should be the key to victory!

Updates

V.0.2.2
The final bugfix and small content update for SAGE 2024:
-The first 10 floors of the Pit Of Trials were added, beating them unlocks a new HUD skin.
-Introduction of Modern Mode in the options! Disable classic lives in the options to play with unlimited lives! Be aware though, you will loose 50 coins upon death!
-Hard Mode got an overhaul. Now it doesn't just reduce time, but also reduces items, removes checkpoints and adds a few additional hazards here and there. Instead of checkpoints you get gifted with a 50 coin bag!
-The Tree Enemy Challenge was made more fair by adding Mushrooms - only in normal mode though!
-When a level becomes haunted, a new Shadow Mario icon appears, as players didn't notice the importance of purple colored levels
-In the card collection you can now view the number of your currently viewed card. Additionally, when viewing a locked card, there will be text indicating the card isn't unlocked yet
-While on the overworld when viewing your progress in the pause menu, the amount of golden coins displayed was adjusted to 6
-When playing a "Hunted" mission, Shadow Mario will start off as smoke and only turn into a humanoid form when he starts being able to damage Mario
-Some more minor bug fixes, such as music glitches, collision fixes, etc.

The next major update will add more control options, zones for Wario's Conquest, more floors for the Pit Of Trials, a hint index and a few other surprises! Thank you for playing Super Mario Land 2 + Wario's Conquest! If you want weekly updates, check out the gamejolt page!

V.0.2.1
A quick bugfix. Here's what is fixed:
-A sign that wrongly states the bell minigames would be disabled was removed
-The Tree Zone boss cannot softlock anymore
-Reaching the bell at the end of a level doesn't display wrong sprites anymore
-The Overworld Minigame cannot softlock anymore

V.0.2
The initial version for SAGE '24!
Includes the Tree Zone and the new Mario Zone!

Comments

I've played up to the third level of Mario Zone, and so far I'm enjoying this Advance-ifed take on Super Mario Land 2. That being said I have some thoughts and questions.
  • I'm not exactly vibing with the choice of having player movement on WASD and running set to left control at the same time. I'd recommend either moving run to the right side of the keyboard, using the arrow keys for movement, or adding in custom mappings.
  • I assume you're planning to have world specific level clear/death themes ala DKC2?
  • Will getting a Game Over in the finished remake take all the Golden Coins away? This was a big "are you kidding me!?" thing about the Game Boy original.
Keep up the good work! I'd love to see this version completed!

Hi, I'm really enjoying this demo so far! I was wondering if there was a Twitter account, Youtube Channel, or Discord server for this game's development that I could follow so I can know when the game updates? Keep up the amazing work, all the updates to this game are REALLY nice and I'm very interested to see that Wario campaign in the future!

Oh my, it's an honor! I actually watched some of your videos years ago. Thanks for giving the game a try! I watched your stream and it helped me quite a lot with developing the game!
To be honest, there doesn't exist a Twitter Acc or server for it, I didn't even expect the game to get much attention in the first place lol
My gamejolt page usually has weekly updates (though I'm taking a small break right now), so that's the best place to look out for. I will probably also start uploading videos on my Youtube channel once I have more to show though. The next update is actually supposed to finally add a playable version of Wario's Conquest, alongside perhaps the third zone for the main game, though it will probably take a month or so to release.

Aw, thanks so much! And i'm glad that the stream helped out with development! I'll definitely be playing it again so i can play all the currently available stages! And thank you for the info! I actually recovered my Gamejolt account specifically to watch for updates on this project. Looking forward to the future, Yak 👍

Actually, I would recommend waiting with continuing the playthrough then. Tomorrow I plan to upload the last update for this years SAGE, which fixes a few bugs and adds small features. The good thing is that the saves from previous versions are generally speaking compatible with all future ones!

Seems like it plays out fine, although I had to exit out in the first level as the controls aren't simple enough, the arrow keys are there for a reason, using WASD while using Jump with the space bar, and either control button for running is just too awkward. Change up the controls and I think we have a winning fan Mario remake here :D A suggestion if I may inquire, use the arrow keys to move and use the left Ctrl button to run and the left Alt button to jump? It seems more comfortable that way. Just an idea. Also, little tidbit on detail, in the opening cutscene when Mario looks at the castle, have him turn to the castle rather looking up. Not trying to nitpick here. ^_^;
