Smooth Tiling (HWA compatible)

This should be helpful for anyone who wanted a graphic to become longer, but instead of stretching the image, a pattern effect like with quick backdrops is desired. Using a system box object, the resizing happens in increments of the pattern size, which doesn't look very fluid in-game. The Background Images object can achieve this, but it is not HWA-compatible.

My method is to use the Surface object. Keeping the source image data separate from the output, I paste the source image multiple times so that it tiles just as desired. An offset is also supported, allowing for the texture to appear to be animated by sliding it. Setting up animations is easy, as unlike the Overlay, the Surface object supports multiple images in one.

The example only shows this effect on vertical scale, but it should be a simple enough base to figure out how to make it work with horizontal scale too. Included is both an example frame and a "barebones" frame which strips all extra actions and comments to make it easier to read and work with.

Well, this is funny.

Did it happen to any of you, that when you're sleeping, you have a dream and you create things you dont know where it comes from, but they're really awesome??

Im musician, and one friend and I spend a lot of time composing small guitar parts for a rock band, and sometimes entire songs.

But some nights, we got to dream with the most awesome song our mind can imagine, mixing all our ideas and records in a way that we dont recognice them.
Is the best sensation in the world !!

Well, tonight was slighly different... I was dreaming with a 2.5 D mario game, with really stunning visuals, but suddently a red spring appeared in the middle of stage... so when I got into the next stage, it was a full 3D sonic game!

I was in snowy mountain (something like gagazet) with north lights on background. *
A lot of big loopings and traps.
No boost pads, no robots or badnicks, no springs either, just sonic and the mountain.
I had to climb it to the top, and there was the danger to fall to the first part of the stage also, like in the classics.

And when i've beaten the level... bOSS !

I entered in a colorfull city (I think it was Soleana ^^) but with streets and cars and this normal city things.
Ok, eggman was there, and I started to follow him.
I rushed him through streets, big rivers and bridges, with the normal sonic speed, anything incontrolable.
Everything was beautiful there.

And after the first hit... the dream ended and I woke up... stunned xD
I couldnt believe what I just dreamt.

I think I'm gonna develop my level designer side lol
Now I know that 'visions' are real.

Anyways, dou you think... Should I go to the doctor?? xDD

*That comes from there for sure:

The fangame I'm working on is called Sonic: Edge Of Darkness and I've been having issues using sprite fonts in Game Maker 8.

The game uses sprite fonts frequently, from startup screens to HUD. The problem here is that when I use sprite fonts in the first room, but when it transitions to the next room it will use sprite fonts but the text never draws. This also happens to the HUD too:
[Image: http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5254/screenshot100a.png

The function [font_add_sprite(sprFontNormal, ord("0"), true, 0);] is used in the startup room's creation code.

Any help please? :squestion:

I noticed this today while watching it and I couldn't believe I was noticing this just now after seeing this video thousands of time. Please excuse me if this is "common knowledge". I'm still sorta new to the sonic "community".

Okay so about 50-ish seconds into the video, little planet shows sonics face and explodes into little sparkles (seemingly disappearing from existence):

Image: http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/4817/explosionq.png

However, a few seconds *after* the explosion when robotnik tries to escape in his little air bike thing and sonic throws a rock at him:

Image: http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/9056/rightthere.png

It's still there!!
I'm just confused, is this a "common knowledge" among Sonic fans or what?

I'm agonizingly close to finishing this. Everything in this model is mine, except the hands which are Damizean's (he ok'd it) and the shoes which were made by a very hard worker at Dimps/Sega for Unleashed's PS2 version (placeholders, of course).

It's supposed to be a classic Sonic model, based on the Sonic Championship model. Criticism is greatly appreciated.

And go!

Concept Storm - September Programming Contest Part 1

First, I'm dropping the number of problems we are doing for the contest from 10 to 6 due to hearing from people that school was keeping them from wanting to do this, so instead of having 5 per two week session, only 3 problems will be done per session.

Again, the format is such that you can do the problem in pretty much whatever language or platform you feel like. These problems do require that you can make a graphical representation of each simulation though, so be prepared for that. If you are Java programmer and don't know much about graphical stuff, I'd suggest Greenfoot (http://www.greenfoot.org/). It's a pretty neat thing made by the guys who made the BlueJ IDE that allows you to make little simulations using java programming with a bunch of 2D graphical features built in and made pretty easy to use.

Naturally, since this is a game forum, these examples will be less focused on pure math and more focused on behavioral programming.

1. You have a 5 story building with 2 elevators. Elevators have two movement modes and an idle mode. Program a simulation of the elevators where you can press either elevator's call button on any of the five floors and you can push any of the elevator's floor buttons at any time. Elevators in up mode should not switch to down mode unless there are no existing calls to a higher floor. Vice Versa for the down mode. In idle mode, modes can switch. If the elevator has a call or a destination at and arrives at a, the door should open and close some short time later. Active buttons should have some indication of being active such as a yellow color.

2. Mario is trapped between two columns of tiles restricting his x movement. All he can do is jump. A bullet bill cannon is shooting for his head with bills of random velocities (test it at a few speeds, provide me a way to choose a speed). To make matters even worse, Mario is wearing concrete shoes and can only jump in a way that he is able to get above a bullet bill for 3 frames. Mario is a smart guy, so he should be able to look at the bill and time his jump so that he bops the bill. Program this.

3. 640x480 A vehicle is moving in a fixed location up and down at an in-determinant speed (test it at a few speeds, provide me a way to choose a speed). A guided missile is approaching from the right side of the screen from the center at 20 pixels per second (use your trig) that can only rotate at a fixed speed of 30 degrees per second. Program the missile's guidance system so that it can always hit the target. (note that there is a hard way to do this and a piss-easy way)

The first three problems are all due for judgment on Saturday the 18th of September. These are all pretty easy I think, but definitely helpful exercises for people who are into behavioral programming.
